The L.R.A., successor to one of Chicago's oldest BDSM Social Clubs in
furtherance of its mission of providing educational and social
opportunities to the Chicago Alternative Community proudly announces
our second installment of "What is Leather?" on Friday, October 23,
2009.
This months topic will be: "Why We Are What We Wear: Leather
Traditions of Flagging, Club Colors, and Earned Leather."
Our discussion this month will be led by LRA's own Riley Johnson.
Riley Johnson is a Chicago-based educator, scholar, and bootblack who
is very proud to have been awarded the Great Lakes Bootblack 2007
title. Riley first honed his bootblacking skills as a formal
apprentice to Leslie Anderson (IMsBB 1999) and Suka Malone (IMsBB
2005) and has continued to learn skills from those he has met in his
travels. He is greatly honored to be a part of Mama's Family as Mama's
Switch Hitter and is a volunteer and voting member of the Leather
Archives and Museum, where he is currently overseeing their vast
collection of pins and buttons. In 2008, Riley competed in the
International Community Bootblack competition where he was awarded the
"Golden Brush" award, recognition of his commitment to the spirit of
the leather community. Riley is also a member of the Board of
Directors at LRA.
This monthly program (4th Friday of every month) will provide
education and information on the Leather lifestyle, answer questions,
address misconceptions, and give a detailed look at what makes someone
a Leatherman or Leatherwoman. This event is for LRA members and
invited guests (please see below).
